Lower Guk Leveling Guide
***Notice*** Everyone reading this guide in 2018 or later should note that this guide was written in 2009 or so when Underfoot was the current expansion pack. As you can imagine a lot has changed in the game since that time and some of what you read in this guide may be inaccurate or misleading. This page *does* still have some useful info which is why my newer leveling guides link here - but you should understand that most of the information here is outdated, I've taken what's correct and incorporated it into my newer leveling guides.
If you're here from one of my older links then head over to my new Everquest Leveling Guides Index page as you'll find guides for each expansion for you to choose from. I strongly urge you to use these newer leveling guides instead.
There are many entrances from Upper Guk to Lower Guk, any of the ways you'll generally be fighting the same mobs. My recommendation is to enter and start clearing your way through (Make sure what you're killing is undead, it's not too hard to tell them apart, the undead frogs look, well, dead!). A good method that I have found to work great in Lower Guk and all other lower level dungeons is to clear through as far as you can go until the mobs start to become too difficult or too risky to kill. At this point you will want to start clearing back in the direction you came from, killing the mobs that have respawned.
Since you level so fast by the time you kill all of the mobs that have respawned and kill your way back again to where we turned around you will be 2 to 3 levels higher which will make the mobs that were too hard earlier probably ten times easier. This method works not only in Lower Guk but almost all zones pre 50. Depending on which entrance you take into Lower Guk, the first "Hard" point that I usually come to in this zone is the five skeletons. You may know what I mean, you'll want to be at least 34 before going by these guys. Unless you can handle some yellow frogs!
Free to Play players might want to wait a bit longer to go deeper inside. Since you're restricted to Apprentice Mercenaries everything is going to be much harder for you as they are about half as powerful as a Journeyman Mercenary. I mention it in a few places but it is worth mentioning again, as a Free to Play player you will really want to hang out in pre 50 zones or areas 2 to 3 levels past when I say to leave them. Trust me on this one, the Apprentice Mercenaries are really not able to handle what a Journeyman Merc can. You will want to play this safe.

Past the skeletons you will find harder frogs that are higher levels (33 to 37). These frogs also almost always come in packs of 2 or 3 and run when they get low on health. Don't be decieved either, their little feet carry them quite fast, if you don't Snare them you're going to be having some serious frog parties with all the friends they bring. If your gear is lacking or if you're a Free to Play player you may want to hang back a bit longer, maybe until you are around levels 35 or 36, then you will want to proceed deeper in.
As far as loot goes, hold onto all Defiant Gear you come across in here to sell in The Bazaar. Even if you're not a Gold Member hold onto it until you become one and sell it then. You will also want to hold onto the Binding Powder that you find here as well as any Spell Research Materials. The Cultural Items you can just destroy as none of them are worth selling in The Bazaar at this low of a level. Maybe you can try selling the Ore, Pelts and Silk but the Loam, Marrow and Spinneret Fluid definitely will not sell.

Throughout your journeys you'll come to a room with two ramps in it and spikes. You'll find it after going down a flight of stairs or two. There is a "killer pull" around here that will usually give you 5-6 frogs. I'd recommend you hang out in this room until around level 40, then continue deeper into the zone.

Once you reach level 46 it will finally be time to leave Lower Guk and head to Veksar. To get to Veksar you will need to head back to Plane of Knowledge (PoK) and take the Fironia Vie Stone. From Fironia Vie you can head right on over to Lake of Ill Omen which will dump you right out nearby Veksar.
Once you're in Lake of III Omen you'll want to head to the Lake in the center of the zone and swim to the bottom. Even with an extremely low swimming skill and no Enduring Breath all Defiant Helms come with Enduring Breath) you will still be able to make it into Veksar without drowning. If you need help finding the entrance to the zone, take a look at my map below. Where it says "Veksar" and has a little what-looks-to-be a plus sign is where the entrance to Veksar is.
You may want to invis yourself before swimming down to Veksar as towards the bottom there are water goblins and if you're swimming skill is extremely low and you get a wee bit lost they could essentially stun you and enough stuns could result in you drowning. The chances of this are extremely low but it is better to be safe than dead!
