***Notice*** Everyone reading this guide in 2018 or later should note that this guide was written in 2009 or so when Underfoot was the current expansion pack. As you can imagine a lot has changed in the game since that time and some of what you read in this guide may be inaccurate or misleading. This page *does* still have some useful info which is why my newer leveling guides link here - but you should understand that most of the information here is outdated, I've taken what's correct and incorporated it into my newer leveling guides.

If you're here from one of my older links then head over to my new Everquest Leveling Guides Index page as you'll find guides for each expansion for you to choose from. I strongly urge you to use these newer leveling guides instead.

At level 4 you will want to head to the level 4 - 8 area marked on my map and kill the bear cubs, young pumas and hollow drakes here until you reach level 8. You don't have to kill only these mobs, you can kill anything you want just these are the three types of mobs that are mostly in the area. If these mobs are a bit too challenging right away at level 4 you can stay at the spiders for another level or two.

At this level you will want to let your Tank Merc do all of the fighting. I usually just attack the mob once to get the Tank merc engaged and then back away. Your skills won't go up from doing this but you will get the fastest XP this way and you won't have any chance at all to die. You can worry about your skills later, our goal is to get you through these levels as quick as possible. At this area you will want to focus on killing the yellow and red cons as they will provide you with the most XP you can get. You'll have trouble soloing them if you don't let your merc do all of the work.

If there are a lot of people here you can use the caves to the east. They have more mobs in them for you to kill. Equip any Defiant Gear you find here if you can use it and hold onto the High Quality Pelts to sell to other players in The Bazaar if you have a Gold Membership and can set up a Trader

Once you reach level 8 you will want to venture northwest across the river and kill the Gnolls and Skeletons until you reach level 12. Be warned, these two mobs will be your first real challenge in the game as they both scowl at you, ready to attack which means if you get close enough to them they will attack you unprovoked. Also they hit harder than the previous animals we have been facing for the past few levels.

Though an upside to these mobs is they're the first mobs that you will be facing that drop actual coin (money). Granted it isn't a lot of money at all but some is better than nothing, especially as a new player! As with before if these mobs are too challenging for you right away you can stick to the animal camp for a little bit longer. Although these mobs will not be a challenge at all if you let your merc do 100% of the work. I can't stress to you enough how much faster you will level with your merc in the driver's seat for awhile.

You will want to bail on the gnolls and skeletons at level 14 to head to Blightfire Moors. At least if you're a Gold Member (paying subscriber) that's the level you will want to leave here. Since paying players have access to Journeyman Mercenaries your merc will be much more powerful than a Free to Play player. If you're a free to play player you should probably stick here until level 16 or 17 then move onto Blightfire Moors.
