Hunt Preparation Guide - MHFU & MHF2

Felyne Chefs Cooking

This is my Hunt Preparation guide which is a guide I designed for players who are new to the Monster Hunter series or to MHFU/MHF2 and are struggling with some of the harder bosses in the game. Before we jump into the guide I feel obligated to give you some general advice about fighting tougher enemies in this game.

My first piece of advice is your gear and weapon should synergize with each other. What I mean is - if you're using a weapon or ammo type that deals piercing damage then you'll want armor that boosts your piercing damage. An alternative to this is getting armor that allows you to resist the screams that bosses use or their footsteps that shake the ground. Resisting these things will give you an opportunity to attack them as they go through the animation.

If you are having trouble picking out armor and weapons and don't understand what the various skills do I recommend you check out the MHFU Skill List Wiki page as that will have all of the information you need. The next piece of advice I have for you is to learn the monster's animations. This is the 'secret' to being good at the game, once you learn the monster's animations it will become significantly easier to defeat them.

Last but not least my final piece of advice is to switch to Light Bowgun or some ranged weapon. Melee weapons in this game are atrocious in my opinion and I can't recommend them to anyone. With all of that out of the way, let's dive into the rest of my advice which is covered in this guide.

The rest of this page will cover what items to bring with you on hunts and what to eat in the Felyne Kitchen. We'll cover the Felyne Kitchen first then go over what items to bring on hunts. Below you'll notice a list of recipes I have put together for the Felyne Kitchen - I believe these are the best recipes you can make in the Kitchen for your character.

I personally always do the Dairy + Drink combo which will max out your Health and Stamina before a hunt (but I suck and am not a min maxer). Without this combo you'll have to use Nutrients to increase your Health and any of the dozen items that increase your Stamina. The downside to doing this combo is you'll need to use Demondrug/Armorskin every hunt since you don't get an Attack/Defense benefit from your food. Ultimately the choice is yours in what you want to do, I am just giving you the options.

Favorite Felyne Chef Recipes (5 Chefs):

DairyDairy + DrinkDrink: +50 Health and +50 Stamina

BranBran + FishFish: +40 Health and +20 Defense

MeatMeat + DrinkDrink: Attack Up Small and +5 Fire Resistance

BranBran + DrinkDrink: +20 Health and +5 Water Resistance

FishFish + VegetableVegetable: +10 Defense and +5 Ice Resistance

FruitFruit + DairyDairy: +50 Health and +5 Dragon Resistance

FruitFruit + DrinkDrink: Attack Up Small and +5 Thunder Resistance

Aside from the Felyne Kitchen the other important thing to teach you is what items to bring on each hunt. You'll always want to bring your Powercharm, Powertalon, Armorcharm and Armortalon with you since they give you passive buffs as long as they're in your inventory. The other items you bring with you will depend on what monster you're fighting and what type of weapon you are using.

Melee need to bring Sharpening Stones with them and ranged will need to bring ammo or coatings depending on if you're using a Bow or Bowgun. Ranged users will also need to bring Book of Combos with them and additional reagents to make ammo or coatings for some of the tougher bosses and hunts.

Below I have included a generalized list of items that you should bring with you on various hunts. This is a list that will work for about 90% of the monsters in this game - some monsters will require a slightly different set of items which I will address further down this page.

List of Items to Bring on Hunts:

- Powercharm & Powertalon
- Armorcharm & Armortalon
- 10 Potions
- 10 Mega Potions
- 10 Well-Done Steaks (or any Stamina restoring item)
- 10 Power Seeds
- 10 Armor Seeds
- 5 Mega Nutrients (Optional depending on food)
- 5 Mega Demondrug
- 5 Mega Armorskin
- 2 Max Potion (Optional)
- 1 Ancient Potion (Optional)
- 25+ Paintballs (If needed)
- 3 Psychoserum (if needed)
- (Bowgun/Bow) Ammo/Bow Coatings
- (Bowgun/Bow) Book of Combos & Items to make more ammo
- (Melee) Sharpening Stones/whatever melee uses

Some of the items on the list above are optional depending on what food you eat at the Felyne Kitchen. If you eat food that buffs your Attack then you won't need to bring Demondrug with you - or if you eat food with +Max Health then you don't need to bring Mega Nutrients with you. Exceptions to this rule apply in situations where you're using armor that reduces your max health as well. Ultimately things are going to be somewhat subjective depending on your situation and you'll need to think about what works for you.

There are also enemy weaknesses to take into account - if you'd like to bring items for those. Sonic Bombs, Stink Bombs, Flash Bombs are all great consumables to use on bosses that are vulnerable. Each of these items will give you a window of opportunity to get in a bunch of attacks which is a big help for most enemies.

As you can probably imagine some enemies in this game will require a more specific item set to take out than what I mention above. Examples of these enemies include Shen Gaoren, Lao-Shan and almost every Elder Dragon in the game (Teostra, Lunastra, Chameleos, Fatalis etc etc).
