Junctioning & Best Magic to Junction - FF8 Guide

Squall Best Magic Junctions

The main system that increases a character's potential in Final Fantasy 8 is the Junction system. You can Junction both magic and GFs to a character and both of these things are heavily intertwined. Depending on what abilities a GF knows determines which Junctions you're allowed to have. If a GF that's junctioned to you knows HP-J then you can junction magic to your HP stat. Otherwise, you can't.

For this reason there are also optimal combinations of GFs so that as many characters as possible can benefit from Junctioned magic. There is a good guide on Gamefaqs about this that I followed for the purposes of my own walkthrough.

Instead of telling you everything that you already know about the Junction system, let me instead go over the best Magic Junction choices. But first!! Just below this paragraph you'll find random useful pieces of advice that I believe deserved to be mentioned but didn't deserve a whole guide for.

Random Junctioning Tips:

- You can only hold 30 spells at a time, if you used the Steam Magic Booster you'll probably need to start deleting spells to make room for better ones late during Disc 1. For more information on How to Delete Spells follow the link

- You can get many of the most powerful Junctioning magics on Disc 1 by Card Moding Triple Triad Cards

- Don't rely on Auto Junctions for ST-Def and St-Atk, it does a very poor job at picking these junctions

- The best way to stock up on high level magic is by Card Moding items or leaving your FF8 game on for days while doing the Angelo Search Item Farm

Best Magic to Junction

Ultima: this is the best junction you can put on any of your stats. If you're a fighter put it on Str. Defense put it on HP, Magic put it on Mag. I'd honestly recommend just putting it on Strength for everyone, which is the same thing as picking Atk in your Auto Junction.

Full-Life: Junction this to your HP stat on everyone

Meteor: Put this on the Mag stat for everyone

Meltdown: Junction this to your Vit stat on everyone

Reflect: Junction this to Spr stat on everyone

Triple: Junction to Spd stat on everyone

Tornado: Junction to Eva stat on everyone

Double: Junction to Hit stat on everyone

Aura: Junction to Luck stat on everyone

Elem-Def: Flare, Life, Shell and Protect

ST-Atk: Sleep, Pain

ST-Def: Berserk, Confuse, Sleep, Death and Pain

Curious about some of the best places to farm the magic mentioned above? Here are lists I created of all the high level magic you can find on each Disc. Disc 2 Draw Locations and Disc 3 Draw Locations.
