Monastery - Syberia 2 Walkthrough

After arriving in the Monastery the first thing you'll want to do is interact with the candle making station nearby and grab the Box of Matches. We'll be back to this location in a little bit when we need to make a candle. For now all you need to do is follow the main path through the Monastery until you reach the courtyard.

The building you'll want to enter is on the left side of the courtyard screen. Inside you'll find a monk Patriarch that we can talk to about our Mission, Help and Shroud. After showing the Shroud to this monk there will be a cutscene after which you'll find yourself in a new place.

When you regain control of Kate you'll want to go 2 screens to the right to find Hans resting in a bed. Speak with Hans about the Monastery to open up additional dialogue options, then talk to him about Brother Alexei twice followed by whatever other dialogue options remain. Exit the room and talk to the monk that was eavesdropping on your conversation about Hans then about Brother Alexei.

The monk will give you a Scroll as well as a Stained-Glass Mammoth, both of which will be added to your inventory. Return to the courtyard where we got control of Kate after the cutscene and grab the Brush that is sitting next to the bucket on the ground. With these items in hand return to the Patriarch inside of the chapel and talk to him again.

Exhaust all available dialogue options with this monk then leave the conversation. On either side of this chapel you'll see paintings that you can investigate with a left click. The painting on the left hand side of the screen (pictured below) is the one that you need. Equip the Brush item and use it on the book portion of the picture to remove the painting and reveal a secret.

Leave the chapel and visit the library which is in the southern portion of the courtyard. Here you'll want to go down to the main floor of the library and grab the large "stick" on the right hand side of the screen. I have included a screen shot of what you need to grab above since it kind of blends in with the environment.

Once you have this in hand the screen will change to an over view of the area and we'll have to pull down the candles and light them. Remember that mural we ruined either to uncover the secret? The secret we uncovered is a picture of the candles we need to light. I've included an additional picture below if you want to see the puzzle solution and exactly which candles you need to light.

Library Candle Puzzle solution

Solving this puzzle will cause a window to open up at the top of the library and light to shine through. Head up stairs to the top of the library and save your game.

**WARNING** Save your game now in a new save because this part coming up is a popular glitch with the game and if you fail to do this puzzle properly you'll have to reload your save. **WARNING**

Head up to the top of the library and inspect the newly opened window. When you look through the window you can see Romansburg, as shown in the picture above. During this screen is when you want to apply the Stained-Glass Mammoth to the window. If you start clicking on the flaps or doing anything else with the window and you don't apply the Stained-Glass Mammoth then you lose your opportunity and it bugs out, permanently broken.

Trust me, I know from experience... hence the warning and the very specific instructions. After you've placed the Stained-Glass Mammoth into the window then you'll want to activate the flaps in the order I give below:

Press the 4 flaps in this order: Bottom, Left, Top, Right

Doing this will focus the light into a certain portion of the room and cast the shadow of a mammoth onto the back wall of the room. Search the mammoth's eye to reveal a secret room with the items we need. Make sure you grab Brother Alexei's Book and the Youkol Relic.

Leave the library once you have these items and follow the central path back towards the elevator that brought you up to this monastery. We're looking for the wheelbarrow which you may have looked inside of earlier but there wasn't anything there... There is now, grab the pair of Shears inside of it and take them to the cemetary which is behind the library we were just at.

Search the grave stone in the cemetary with vines that are growing all around it. Use the Shears on the bramble and then pick up the scrapings on the ground; you'll receive Herbs and Brambles. Now return to the lift that originally brought us up to the monastery and specifically to the candle making station that is here.

How to make a Candle at the Candle Making Station:

0. Place the Herbs and Bramble into the pot
1. Pull the chain/lever on the left
2. Open Mold
3. Click on the Wicks
4. Close the Mold
5. Open Valve
6. Open Mold

If you need help figuring out what to click on at the Candle Making Machine take a look at my screen shot below. Everything I mention above is marked on my picture. Also something to note is you can make a regular Candle by doing the entire above process except not adding the Herbs and Bramble.

How to make a Candle in the Monastery

Successfully making a candle after adding the Herbs and Bramble will net you an Herbal Candle which we need for the next part of the game. Return to Hans and place the Youkol Relic onto the table next to him and the Herbal Candle inside of the relic. Use the Box of Matches to light the candle then wait for Hans to get better. Once he's better speak with him then exit the room.

Return to the chapel where we met the monk Patriarch when we first got to the monastery. The Patriarch won't be here this time so you can enter his room and steal the Ornate Key. It's right out in the open on a pedastal in the center of the room, very hard to miss. Now that you have the Ornate Key you'll want to investigate the locked metal door in the chapel (pictured below).

Open this door and pull the rope inside the room to ring the bell which summons all the monks for prayer. Return to Hans and talk with him again; afterwards go to the cemetary and interact with the casket in the back next to the hole in the wall. Kate will move the casket to be in line with the hole after which you'll want to return to Hans and talk to him again, this time we're leaving!

When you regain control of Kate you'll be back on the train and standing right next to Hans. Speak with Hans about Departure and he'll give you the Mechanical Heart which we need to fix the horses at Cirko's bar. Head over to Cirko's bar and talk with Cirko at the counter about Departure and Horses until you are finished with the available dialogue options.

Now what you'll want to do is investigate the mechanical horses in the bar. You will see the same screen as my picture below. To make things easier for you I have written the next few steps in a list format for you to follow.

1. Place the Mechanical Heart into the contraption
2. Click the ball in the middle to wind up the machine. Do this 3 times, until the horse symbol at the top is all the way to the right on the meter
3. Connect each metal tube in the same way you see in my screen shot below
4. Press the knob in the center again to start the machine

There will be a cutscene after you fix the horses during which the train will be stolen!

Mechanical Heart Puzzle Solution

You will regain control of Kate standing next to the train tracks in Romansburg. The first thing you'll want to do is take out your cell phone and call Oscar to ask what happened. Use the down or up arrows on your phone to cycle through your available numbers. When the conversation with Oscar is finished go inside of the general store and speak with the Colonel, choose the Train and Gangcar dialogue options a few times to advance the story.

Once you've learned all you need from the Colonel head down to the end of the platform near the gate to lower Romansburg and use the nearby lever. This will flip the Gangcar onto the tracks next to Kate; board it and ride it a short distance to the end of the platform before it breaks down.

What we need to do next is head back to the Bourghoff brother's house and pick up the Newspaper on the table near the couch where one of the brothers was sleeping earlier. Once you have this item the next thing you need to do is feed the baby Youki here some Fish Candy.

Escort the Youki back to the Gangcar and hop onboard to leave Romansburg for good.
