Dark World Portals Zelda: A Link To The Past

In A Link to the Past players will be able to travel between two different worlds, The Light World and The Dark World. Most of this travel is done via the Magic Mirror that players can acquire fairly early on in the game. However the Magic Mirror has some restrictions that make it the least optimal route of constantly switching between worlds.

The best way for you to travel between worlds is at a few set locations throughout the game. You're required to take one of these portals near the Tower of Hera prior to obtaining the Moon Pearl which lets you remain in your true form in the Dark World. Including the portal near Tower of Hera there are 9 portals from the Light World to the Dark World.

This page here will give you two screenshots per location to help you find the portals (one of me standing near the portal the other of its location on the map). As well as a little information and what items you'll require to access the portals.

 

Dark World First Portal - Near Tower of Hera

The first portal players are shown that leads to the Dark World is located at the top of Death Mountain nearby the Tower of Hera. There are no requirements for accessing this portal. If you have the Flute fast travel to location 1 which will put you within a few screens of this Dark World portal.

 

Dark World Second Portal - Near Hyrule Castle

This is the second easiest Dark World portal for players to reach. It's hidden under the Hyrule Castle outcropping so you can't see exactly where the portal is in my pictures - but when you run underneath the archway you'll be ported to the Dark World.

 

Dark World Third Portal - Near Kakariko Village

Requirements: Magic Hammer

This is the best Dark World portal to take if you're trying to reach the Village of Outcasts, Skull Woods or a side quest in the northwestern Dark World. If you enter from the top you'll only need a Magic Hammer to smash down a stump. If you have the Titan's Mitts you'll be able to enter from the bottom.

If you have the Flute fast travel 3 will get you close to this Dark World portal.

 

Dark World Fourth Portal - Swamp Portal (Near Link's House)

Requirements: Magic Hammer

I find this to be one of the most convenient portals to the Dark World. It's an extremely fast Flute fast travel from Link's House and it puts you pretty much in the middle of the Dark World.

 

Dark World Fifth Portal - South of Eastern Palace

Requirements: Magic Hammer

This Dark World portal is found just south of the Eastern Palace. The fastest way to reach this location is to use the Flute fast travel to location 5. This will put you right near the portal to the Dark World.

 

Dark World Sixth Portal - Lake Hylia

Requirements: Titan's Mitt

Using this portal will put you in the Ice Palace courtyard of the Dark World. The fastest way to reach this Dark World portal is to Flute fast travel to location 8. From there it's a short swim northwest to the island in Lake Hylia.

 

Dark World Seventh Portal - Flute Fast Travel Location 6

Requirements: Titan's Mitt and Flute

In order to reach this location you'll need to use the Flute's fast travel and choose location 6. You'll arrive on a ledge which will have two heavy stones, lift the one to the right and the portal to the Dark World will be on the ground.

 

Dark World Eighth Portal - Southern Death Mountain

Requirements: Titan's Mitt

This portal can be found on one of the southern most portions of Death Mountain. You'll have to lift up a heavy stone with your Titan's Mitt in order to reveal the location of this Dark World portal. The fastest way to reach Death Mountain is to use the Flute's fast travel and select location 1. You'll also need to use your Hookshot to reach this Dark World portal.

 

Dark World Ninth Portal - Turtle Rock on Death Mountain

This Dark World portal is also found on Death Mountain - to the east of Tower of Hera. If you aren't already on Death Mountain the fastest way to get here is to use the Flute's fast travel while in Light World. Select location 1 and then head up towards the Tower of Hera.

For this portal you have to hit three stakes down in the correct order to make it appear. That order is right, up, left. This portal is the only way to reach the dungeon, Turtle Rock.
