Illusion of Gaia Walkthrough - Chapter 1

When you begin the game you will get a brief introduction to the main character and the story. School will end and you'll gain control of Will, the main character. Explore around town if you'd like to learn the layout, to advance the story you'll want to head to the southeast portion of town and enter the Seaside Cave from the docks.

Talk with both of your friends when you enter the cave and then your third friend will enter. Speak with him too and then take a seat next to where he sits at the northern end of the table. There will be a bit more dialogue after which you'll have to move the statue in this room as a bit of a tutorial.

You can move the green statue in the bottom right corner of this area by holding L or R on the controller while facing the statue. Holding L or R will spin your baton around and pull some objects towards you. Try to remember this for later because we'll be using it from time to time.

After moving the statue your friends will ask you to pick a card from the ground, you'll have to press A on top of any card - your pick will always be the Ace of Diamonds. That's all we need to do inside of the cave, once you're done here return to your house which is to the right of the school building in town.

Speak with the pig in your house then try to go upstairs, you'll meet Kara next. After talking with Kara go upstairs and talk with your grandparents, go back downstairs and watch the scene - then talk with your grand parents again once all of the drama is over. When you're finished go upstairs and you'll automatically go to sleep and advance to the next day.

In the morning you'll want to go downstairs and speak with your grand parents again. Your grandmother will give you a letter from the King with an unreasonable demand. She will also teach you Lola's Melody which is an item in your inventory. Before we leave town we should collect some Red Jewels and trade them to the Jeweler (pictured below).

There are 50 Red Jewels hidden around the world, but only 3 of them are found in this town. Before you leave town I recommend you find all 3 (locations below) and trade them to the Jeweler. You'll get an Herb as a reward which isn't much but that's ok because we want the future rewards more anyway.

Red Jewel #1: Search the left side of the bell tower on top of Will's School.

Red Jewel #2: Inspect a pot in Lance's basement

Red Jewel #3: Keep going in and out of the Seaside Cave until the fisherman spawns south of the entrance/exit. Inspect the pot near him for a jewel.

After finding all the jewels and turning them in you're free to exit town via the northern staircase. Talk with the NPC who blocks it and he will let you pass. Our next destination is Edward's Castle which you can select on the World Map. When you arrive at Edward's Castle the first thing you'll want to do is visit Kara. You can find her room by going up the eastern stairs until you reach the top.

Red Jewel #4: Speak with the person standing behind the eastern column on the first floor of the castle. You won't be able to see them, you'll have to press the talk button blindly.

Speak with the guard blocking Kara's room and she will overhear, enter the room and speak with her then leave. Return to the 1F of the castle and enter the room to the left of the statue near the entrance. This room will lead to the King's Chambers, speak with him in here and regardless of your answer, you'll be thrown into prison.

Castle Prison

Inside the prison you'll want to inspect the chain ball, the locked door and the moss on the wall in the back. After enough time passes you will have some bread thrown into your jail cell. Eat the bread and then wait again until the day advances. During the night you will get a scene, agree to the request from your dad and a shining stone will fall from the ceiling.

Use the L or R buttons to pull this shining thing towards you, you'll get a lot of dialogue explaining what to do next. When it's finished Kara's pig will be waiting outside of your cell, talk with it through the cell bars and you'll grab the letter from Kara along with the Prison Key. Equip that key so that we can use it to unlock the cell and free ourselves.

Search the two adjacent cells, one has a comatose soldier and the other has a portal to Gaia which will let us save our game. She also provides a bit more information, each time we clear an area of all the enemies we'll get a crystal which upgrades our character. In other words, being thorough = good.

The next few areas you go through will have lots of enemies, defeat them all to get permanent upgrades for Will. Eventually you will run into a pair of statues which you can move using the L or R buttons just like you did inside of the Seaside Cave earlier in the game. Inside this same room you will find a switch you can hit with your weapon to move some spiked rolling balls.

Pay attention to how the spiked rolling balls move because you'll need to hit the switch and run behind them once or twice to defeat all the enemies and collect all of the loot. The chest in the SW corner of this area has an Herb inside of it.

Red Jewel #5: You'll find a broken switch that you must climb above and jump down on top of to activate. Loot the chest inside of the room this opens for the Red Jewel.

Keep going north of where you find that Red Jewel and you will hit a room with two switches on either end. You'll need to equip Lola's Melody in the item window and play your flute next to the Tulip in the NW. Follow the instructions after you do this and hit the switch at the same time to open the door.

Continue into the next room and defeat all the enemies to unlock another portal to Gaia. You may notice a new statue inside of this room, interact with the statue to unlock Freedan, a new transformation for Will.

After you unlock the Freedan upgrade exit the mirror and use your new sword to hit the switch (pictured above). Now that we're older our weapon has a bit more range and is capable of reaching the switch behind the barrier. Keep following the linear path forward until you reach a fork, left goes to a chest with a Red Jewel #6 and an enemy. Right goes deeper into the dungeon.

Red Jewel #7: After meeting Lilly go south and inspect the right side of the bottom barrel.

Will returns to his normal shape in the next area and you will meet a girl named Lilly. Collect Red Jewel #7 after talking with Lilly then exit to the north, you will find yourself back in Edward's Castle. Go upstairs and talk with Kara, she will join you. Return to the basement and she'll bring up food being in one of the barrels, search the nearby barrel to find a roasted yak leg.

Once you've got the roasted yak leg exit the castle and you will automatically return to Will's House in South Cape. His house will be ransacked, go upstairs and talk with Kara to advance the story. Lilly will show up and there will be a scene. Exit your house and give the Red Jewels you've gotten recently to the Jeweler, you'll get another upgrade.

Return to your house and speak with Lilly when you're ready to continue to the next town and advance the story. Our next stop is Itory Village, when you arrive Lilly will ask you to play Lola's Melody on your flute. Play the song and the entire village will appear, follow Lilly and Kara east to meet your parents.

Head up the stairs in this village until you reach the top, there will be a portal here to that dark realm place where we save our game. Enter and inspect the pillar in this room to learn Psycho Dash, a new ability for Will. After learning this skill you'll need to dash down the slope in town so that Will (quite literally) launches himself into the sky and lands in a graveyard on the other side of town.

Speak with the Elder's ghost in this graveyard, he is found behind the middle tombstone and can be difficult to see depending on your eyesight. He blinks rapidly, if you can't see him just press the talk button above the middle tombstone and you'll find him that way. Answer "Yes" both times he asks you a question and then climb down the ladder to the cave entrance below.

Inside the cave you'll want to use your new Psycho Dash skill to charge into the northern wall and create a hole in it (pictured below). Hit the wall with your normal weapon to find the spot we need - the spot you charge will make a sound when you hit it but the rest of the wall will not.

To use Psycho Dash you'll want to hold down the A button until you start blinking then let it go. Make sure you're standing close to the wall when you do this because Will only charges a short distance when you use this skill. Enter the room behind the wall and pick up the Incan Statue A item.

Return to the house Lilly is in and speak with your mother and father outside then to Lilly. After a short conversation you and Lilly will fast travel to the next town, Moon Tribe Camp. Talk with the spirits on top of the mountain until one tells you about the Incan Statue in the cave below you. Head downstairs and into the cave to begin your next challenge.

For this challenge you need to defeat all of the enemies within 20 seconds. You'll find all of these enemies in the northern portion of this area; 20 seconds is more than enough time to defeat them all. After you've taken care of them all grab the Incan Statue B from the altar and talk to Lilly outside to travel to the Incan Ruins.

When you regain control of Will go east to the cave entrance for a scene with Kara. After the scene enter the doorway to begin the next dungeon, Larai Cliff. The first part of this dungeon is very linear, clear all the monsters in each room until you find a chest at a dead end with the Diamond-shaped Block inside.

After looting this item you'll want to return to the entrance of the dungeon and equip it. You'll be able to place this block into the diamond shaped hole right next to the spike pit in the first room of the dungeon (pictured below).

Not very far into the next area you'll find a fork in the road, go down the ladder to continue with the dungeon. When you get back inside search the skeleton for a note and head right to some statues that are blocking the path to a chest. You can use your Psycho Dash skill to destroy the statues, search the chest at the end for an Herb.

We can't do anything else in this room for right now, it's a dead end. Backtrack a bit so that you're outside again and return to the two bridges. If you look between these two bridges there is a rock missing which means we can jump down in that spot - jump. This will put you on a ledge with a new doorway.

From here the path is quite linear, defeat all of the monsters that you can along the way and eventually you will run into a room with four gold statues. If you get too close to one of these statues it will activate and attack you, that's not what we want. You'll want to pull these statues onto the gold tiles so that all four are pressed down at the same time. Use the L or R buttons to pull the statues towards you, just like we did with the other statues earlier in the game.

Once you move all four golden statues onto the tiles a door will open in the north, go through and continue with the dungeon. The next important thing you'll come to is one of those portals which will let us save the game - inside this one you'll find a pillar that transforms you into Freedan again (big buff Will) which you'll definitely want to do.

The first thing I recommend you do is pick up the Melody of the Wind item which is directly south of where you get Freedan. Go through the door here and you will come out on top of a statue's head, there will be a short scene during which you'll learn Melody of the Wind.

After doing that, backtrack in the dungeon to the area shown in my picture below.

Freedan's sword can reach what Will's could not, defeat the enemy shown above and then run/jump across the gap to reach another pack of enemies. Once they're all taken care of you'll want to exit this area in the south to reach a new part of the dungeon. The next room is quite large but also quite linear, you'll find an Herb inside of a chest inside here.

After you complete the second room of enemies there will be a fork in the dungeon with one path that goes up and one that goes down. The path that goes up leads you to a previous room of the dungeon where we could reach a chest with an Herb but not the other chest. Now we can get the other chest which has Red Jewel #9 inside!

Red Jewel #9: Found inside of a treasure chest in Incan Ruins; reached from a fork deep within the cave.

Keep going forward through the dungeon and you will eventually reach the room shown in my picture below. There are tons of gold squares in this room and what you need to do is stand on the correct one for a couple of seconds until you open the passageway in the south.

If you'd like, you can use my picture to see which gold tile is the correct one to stand on. Otherwise, you'll need to return to the save room and switch back to Will then come back here and play the Wind Melody song. Doing this will cause one tile to glow - that's the tile we need to stand on.

Those of you who switched to Will to play the Wind Melody, you should switch back to Freedan in the next area since it has a portal. Place the Inca Statue A and Inca Statue B on top of the two statue heads outside to activate the portal to the boss. When you're ready to challenge the boss step onto the square between the 3 pillars to be transported to a new area.

 

Boss Fight - Castoth

Castoth is your first real boss fight of the game and it's a pretty easy one after you learn what to look for. During the fight you will have to dodge some lines of fire which go across the platforms as well as a bouncing fireball which ricochets off all walls around the room. The boss will also attack you with his hands and lasers that come out from atop his head.

To damage this boss you first need to defeat the hands, get near them and hit them to destroy them. After eliminating both hands you need to wait until the boss opens his eyes a bit then hit his head as much as possible. Once the head becomes immune to damage again run behind it until the lasers stop - then rinse and repeat.

I strongly recommend you save your game before the fight and see how it all works and then reload and do the fight again. My first time doing this boss I burned through all 3 Herbs before beating it and my second time I used none.

 

Incan Gold Ship, Raft & Freejia Walkthrough

Jump down the hole in the next room and you will land on the Incan Gold Ship. Talk with people onboard then go downstairs and speak with the Queen. She'll tell you about an item in the basement, go downstairs and grab the Mystic Statue from the chest. You know this item is important because it comes with its own cool cinematic!

Head back upstairs to the deck and climb the ladder to reach the crow's nest at the very top. Talk with the kid here and you will have a scene where the ship starts sailing out in the open ocean. Return to the room below deck with the beds and go to sleep to advance the story. In your dream go downstairs and talk with the woman.

(Can Permanently Miss) Red Jewel #10: After waking up from the dream on the Incan Ship speak with Seth who is upstairs on the deck of the ship.

When you wake up you'll find your friends. Talk with them if you'd like but before you do anything else go upstairs and speak with Seth for Red Jewel #10. After getting that go back downstairs and inspect the dead Queen to advance the story. Go upstairs and watch the scene unfold.

Will and Kara on Raft

You will regain control of Will on a Raft, I recommend you use the turbo speed button on your emulator because most of these segments go by automatically when enough time passes. For the first day let time pass and you'll eat the yak leg with Kara. On the second day hit some fish and get yelled at then let time pass.

When you get to the fourth day talk with Kara twice and then collect the note from the pot in front of her. Keep talking with her until the day advances. The next day you'll need to hit fish while Kara is looking away, talk to her and then catch some fish for her too. Sharks will threaten you after this, just wait around until they leave and then talk with Kara to advance the plot.

Keep speaking with Kara from here on out to advance. When you wake up in the man's bed speak with Kara and then follow her outside. Grab the Red Jewel #11 from the pot here and then speak with the dog and Kara. You and her will automatically depart for Freejia.

Red Jewel #11: Inspect the pot outside of the man's house who saves you after your stint on the raft. It's the pot to the right of his door.

City of Freejia

After you arrive in town follow Kara to the Inn and talk with her. Inside you should speak with all of your friends then go upstairs and get Red Jewel #12. From the Inn go west and then north up the alleyway until you hit a wall. To the right of this wall you'll find two people in purple robes and to the right of that you'll find a trash can that's spilled on the road. Inspect the trash can for an HP Jewel which gives you a permanent health increase.

If you need a portal to save your game or heal check the house right next to the trash can that gave you the HP Jewel. Further east of the trash can I just mentioned you'll find another trash can next to a guy standing, inspect this one for an Herb. You can also enter this building to learn the city's dark secret, if you go up to the roof you can jump down and get to a different part of the city too.

Red Jewel #12: Search the green pot in the room upstairs in the Inn.

Red Jewel #13: Go east of the hotel and jump down into the flowers; go down and you'll find a hidden path. Talk with the purple robed man to get the jewel.

Red Jewel #14: Head to the top of the Labor Camp and jump off the building to the right. Climb up the ladder to the south and jump off this building; you'll be able to access the building you're standing on now from the roof. Speak with both people inside to learn the location of the laborer who ran way. Return to the two purple robed men in the back part of town looking for a laborer and tell them where the hidden one is. You'll be given the jewel as a reward.

When you're ready to advance the story you'll want to climb on top of the Labor Camp building and jump off the roof to the right. Go into the passage in the northeast and tell the purple robed man that you want to purchase a laborer. The kid on the right will tell you where Erik is which is who we need to save.

Erik is found inside of the building in the northwest part of town. Inspect the door and then hit it to break it down, speak with Erik inside to learn the location of the mine. We're done with town now, to continue the game exit town to find yourself back on the World Map - from here travel to Diamond Mine.
