The Great Glacier - FF7 Walkthrough

This is one of the biggest and most confusing areas in Final Fantasy 7. There are a total of 13 different areas and they are connected by paths that mostly all look the same. Some of the areas have treasure - really good treasure at that... So it's highly recommended you spend some time figuring out how to collect it before giving up and leaving.

I found a pretty good map online, which is provided just below these paragraphs. I'd highly recommend you reference this as much as much as possible when collecting the treasures, it'll help you a lot. Further down this page I have a guide for each piece of loot and how to reach it. I give you a land mark to start at then guide you to the piece of loot from that landmark.

Note: From the Snow enemies in this area you're able to steal a Circlet item which increases your Magic and Spirit stats by +30. They look like the girl from the Shiva summon - hard to miss them since nothing else looks like them.

All Materia - Inside Cave in Snow Field

This Materia is found in the first screen south when leaving the Base of Gaea's Cliff. The easiest way to get to Base of Gaea's Cliff is wait until you pass out. In the central part of the large snow field area you'll find a small cave, inside inspect the pot for the All Materia. You'll probably pass this cave multiple times while collecting the other items in Great Glacier.

 

 

Mind Source - Forested Area

The fastest way for you to reach the Forested Area is by traveling north from the entrance of the Great Glacier. Pictured above is the entrance area you're looking for. I strongly recommend you try and remember exactly how you get to this location as we're going to be using this as a springboard for the next few treasures.

Note: From the Forest Area go directly east to find the Safety Bit area. It'll save you a good deal of time backtracking if you do both treasures now.

 

Safety Bit - Glacier Area

Much like the Mind Souce before it, start at the Great Glacier entrance area and go north until you reach the forest area. In the forest you'll want to go east two screens until you come to the glacier area shown in my other screen shot above.

Once you're in this screen you will want to run across the glacier northwest until you come to the area with all the small ice islands that you have to jump across (pictured below). If you're struggling to figure out which order to jump across the islands use my screen shot below and follow the arrow.

The Safety Bit is found inside a cave on this island, just inspect the bag inside to acquire it.

Added Cut Materia - Mountain Side

The Added Cut Materia is probably the most difficult treasure of them all to reach since it isn't found in any of the main areas. It's found in a one way path from one area to another. First you'll want to get to the area where you find the Alexander Summon, it's easiest to guide you here from there. If you don't know where this is, it's the area shown in my screen shot above.

It's also the area at the upper right of the Great Glacier map provided above. From this area you'll want to travel south, you'll go down two angled paths before finding yourself in the area shown in my screen shot below. Once you're in this area you're going to want to turn around and go back the way you just came. You'll be on another angled path but this time in the opposite direction and going up.

On the second angled path like this is where you will find the Added Cut Materia. If text directions don't work well for you, I would recommend you use my video below. Hopefully that will be able to guide you better.

 

 

Alexander Summon Materia

Before you're able to acquire the Alexander Materia you'll need to visit the hot springs area which is found almost directly south of the Gaea's Cliff Base Camp. You'll need to inspect the hot springs as shown in my screen shot above - otherwise the ghost in Alexander's cave won't disappear and you can't get the Materia.

As for the cave entrance that leads to the Alexander Materia, from Gaea's Cliff Base Camp you'll want to go south into the snow field where the wind blows your camera around and east from this area. Use the Great Glacier map at the top of the page if you need more guidance.

 

Elixir - Western Snow Cave

You can reach this place one of two ways, go east from the forested area or east when you're at the entrance area of the Great Glacier. Both of these places will take you to the screen showed above. Once you're at this screen all you have to do is go to the north and you'll find the area shown in the screen shot below with the Elixir.

 

Once you've acquired all of the treasures or you've decided to give up and move on instead of heading south into the windy snow field from the Gaea's Cliff Base Camp you'll want to travel north into Gaea's Cliff.
