Galamoth
Acquired: Defeat Legion in the Underground Cemetery.
In-Game Description: Recognize places in which time has been stopped.
The Galamoth ability will allow you to defeat the elusive bunny-like enemy named Chronomage. With the Galamoth ability, Chronomage will not be able to turn back time, and you'll not only be able to attack him with this ability activated, but you'll also be able to proceed past the point which the Chronomage hinders you from proceeding farther into the castle.
Grave Keeper
Acquired: In the beginning of the game, a few screens east of the beginning area.
In-Game Description: Backdash by pressing L.
You don't need the Grave Keeper ability to proceed in the game - however, it's a good defensive maneuver to master. Pressing the L Button with the Grave Keeper equipped, your character will quickly dash backwards. This is good to avoid enemy attacks and the like in a quick fashion.
Hippogryph
Acquired: In the top area of the castle, the Hippogryph ability is located in a secret area concealed by a breakable wall.
In-Game Description: Perform a high jump by pressing L in mid-jump." (In the game, there is a spelling error. It spells "mid-jump" as "lid-jump."
The Hippogryph ability, while not necessary to acquire, allows you to do a high jump that propels you fast and hard into the air. It's useful to use to get out of the way of oncoming enemies or incoming attacks, and to navigate higher into the castle without using the double jump or Giant Bat soul.
Kicker Skeleton
Acquired: Defeat the Kicker Skeleton common enemy in the Floating Garden to receive his soul.
In-Game Description: Kick during a double jump by pressing [down] + A.
A useful ability to acquire, the Kicker Skeleton ability, when activated, allows you to perform a kick attack while airborne, injuring any and all enemies in your path. Press down on the directional pad and A simultaneously while in midair to perform this attack.
Malphas
Acquired: Defeat the Great Armor in the study.
In-Game Description: Jump again in mid-jump.
The double-jump is absolutely integral to your mission. Using it, you are literally able to jump twice in a row without hitting the ground. This allows you to get to many out of reach areas without having to use the Giant Bat soul or anything of the like. Quite useful (and 100% necessary to acquire) indeed.
Skeleton Blaze
Acquired: Defeat the Big Golem in the Dance Hall.
In-Game Description: Slide by pressing [down] +A.
You acquire the Skeleton Blaze fairly early in the game, and for good reason. With the Skeleton Blaze ability obtained and activated, your character is able to slide under various things to advance farther and deeper into the castle. Without it, you won't get very far. In other words, if you can't seem to get any farther in the game, make sure the Big Golem in the Dancehall is slain, and grab the ability from the room beyond where you fought him.
