Controls

D-Pad: Move Mario around
A Button: Jump or swim faster while underwater
B Button: Shoot fireballs or pick up shells and other items
L Button: Use item stored in reserve
R Button: Run
Select Button: Switch between Mario and Luigi (in certain levels)
Start Button: Pause the game or access the world map

 

In addition, there are some special moves that can be performed:

Spin Jump: Jump and then press the A Button again while in mid-air to perform a spin jump, which can break blocks below Mario or defeat certain enemies.

Wall Jump: Jump towards a wall and then jump again while pressing in the opposite direction to perform a wall jump, which can be used to reach higher areas.

Ground Pound: Jump and then press down on the D-Pad to perform a ground pound, which can break certain blocks or defeat enemies below Mario.
