Prison Break - NWN Main Quest (Chapter 1)

Peninsula Prison Break Quest Start

Peninsula: Prison Break is one of the Main Quests in Chapter 1 of the Main Campaign. This quest acts as the overarching quest for the Peninsula District; when you finish the Peninsula District and defeat the final boss of this area you'll complete this quest. You will most often start this quest by speaking with Bethany outside of the Temple of Tyr, she'll approach you the first time you leave the Temple at the start of the game.

One thing to note is there are many smaller subquests that are tied to this one that will pop up in your quest log temporarily then disappear as you are solving this quest. I'm not going to document each of these quests (unless they are important) and instead I am going to focus on how to solve this quest.

Before we start working on this quest I would recommend doing some side activities first. The first thing you should do is get started with Temple of Tyr: Never's Tomb; we need to speak with Briley who can be found in this zone. After talking with Briley you'll also want to visit Mizzenmast Mercantile in the eastern portion of this district and purchase some Magic Bags from him. I typically buy the 80% reduction and 60% reduction ones.

With those tasks out of the way it's now time to get inside of the Prison. There are 2 ways we can do this - the first method of entry is through the Tanglebrook Estate which is north of the Prison. An alternative method is to enter the Sewers south of the Prison and defeat a Gang Leader inside of here. He will drop a Prison Key which will allow you to open the front doors of the prison and enter that way.

Peninsula District Prison Ways In

It doesn't matter which approach you take to get inside of the Prison, you can always backtrack through both areas and clear all the enemies in each to maximize your EXP if you'd like. One thing to note is inside of the Tanglebrook Estate you'll find the Celestial Elixir item which is part of Sharwyn's Tale.

On the first floor of the Prison our only 2 goals are to clear out all of the enemies for EXP and loot everything we can. Aside from that you'll want to proceed down to the 2nd floor through the western staircase. The second floor is called the Containment Level and has a Lever in the middle of the map which will open all of the jail cells on this floor. It will also open the door in the eastern portion of the area that leads to the stairs going down into The Pits map which is the last map before the boss of this dungeon.

You'll find the exit leading down into the Lair of the Devourer in the northwestern portion of The Pits. It's a bit of a maze to navigate but that's ok since this map is mostly for EXP farming anyway.

Bug: Some of the Levers in The Pits map won't allow you to pull them. Your character will try to position behind the Lever inside of the wall -- but since he can't clip through the wall he'll just stand there and not pull the Lever. I have encountered this bug on a few of my characters and the best solution is to smash down the door or to circle around the door and open it from behind.

Intellect Devourer Boss Fight

In the Prison's Basement you'll find Head Gaoler Alaefin along with numerous Former Guards all of which will be neutral to you. When you defeat Head Gaoler Alaefin an Intellect Devourer will appear and flee to a nearby Former Guard merging with them and then attacking you again. For the first part of this boss fight you'll have to chase the Intellect Devourer around as it goes from guard to guard.

Alternatively, you can attack all of the Former Guards and eliminate them instead of waiting for the Intellect Devourer to do it for you. Each time the Intellect Devourer finds a new host it'll be fully healed so there is no point in trying to kill it until all guards are dead. Once defeated be sure to loot the Devourer's Brain from its corpse as that's the item we need to complete this quest.

Much like with all of the other Waterdhavian Creatures you should also loot all of the chests in the boss area. There will always be a magical weapon for you that matches your character's Weapon Focus or Weapon Proficiency skill. When you're all done return to Aribeth in the Temple of Tyr and give her the Devourer's Brain to complete this quest.
