Guide for a Raiding Shadow Priest (Created by Daenyx)
Priests are designed to be the best healers in the game. In addition to healing the priest can also be a Mana Battery for groups. A Mana Battery is fancy talk for the priest using his Vampiric touch ability to restore mana to him and his group.
The Priest has more then just healing spells at his disposable. He also has many spells that decrease the damage you take such as Pain Suppression and Power Word: Shield. Priests can also DPS if they spec shadow, and the DPS they do as Shadow Spec isn't by any means a push over.
Priests are also very well known for having the only ability to remove a Paladins Bubble, Mass Dispell. Priests are also one of the two classes that have the ability to strip other players of their buffs, the other class being a shaman.
If you enjoy playing a class that is always in high demand for groups and can heal or DPS then the priest is for you.
Priests Strengths:
- Desired in all groups and raids because of their ability to heal and excellent buffs.
- They can remove other players buffs, Mana Burn and they are the only class that can remove a Paladins bubble.
- Must be near your target in order Mindflay, which makes dodging AoE in PvE harder.
Priests Weaknesses:
- Viper Sting, priests are the only healer that cannot dispell it.
- Slowest class to level
- Very dependant on Resilience in PvP and Arena's
- If you're shadow spec you are generally the first target in the arena
Mass Dispell and You
Learning how to position your Mass Dispell is one of the most important things as a Priest. It may be difficult to get a hold of at first but after using it a couple dozen times you should be fairly familiar with its mechanics. It is absolutely critical that you learn how to position this spell since it is the only counter to a Paladins bubble in arena.
Balancing Healing and Support
The most important thing all priests will need to learn is how to balance healing and your Support Skills. What I mean by Support skills is Mana Burn, Dispell Magic, and Mass Dispell. I'm missing a few skills but this gives you a general outline. A good Priest knows when his team mates are in danger and its time to heal them. He also will know when he is safe to Mana Burn, Dispell and Drink.
