Mother 2 is a role-playing video game developed by Ape Inc. and HAL Laboratory, and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was first released in Japan in 1994 under the title Mother 2: Gyiyg Strikes Back , and later released in North America in 1995 under the title "EarthBound". The game features a unique modern-day setting and quirky sense of humor, with the player controlling a group of children as they travel across the game's world in order to stop an alien invasion. The game was a critical success in Japan, but received mixed reviews in North America due to its unconventional style and lack of traditional RPG mechanics. Over time, however, it has gained a dedicated following and is now considered a cult classic.
