Valheim - How To Keep Your Base Safe
The Ocean biome in Valheim is mostly a transient one, you will pass through it on the way to other biomes but there isn't much here for you to do. Unlike the other biomes there is no boss or progression, all you'll find here are Leviathans and Serpents.
Leviathans are giant floating islands with Abyssal barnacles on them; you can mine these for Chitin. This material is only used to craft two items, one of which is the Abyssal Harpoon which is a rather unique item. You can use this item to pull enemies to you (or tamed animals). Using the Harpoon, you're able to drag Serpents to shore which allows you to loot all of the items they drop when they're defeated instead of just the meat.
Serpents are the second thing for us to talk about, their Serpent Meat is used in a few good cooking recipes like Serpent Stew and their Serpent Scales will make the Serpent Shield. Both of these items are great for early-late mid game but they'll be replaced once you get to Mistlands and Ashlands.
Other Ocean Tips & Tricks
- When sailing I recommend always bringing Portal mats with you along with 50 Wood. You'll want extra Wood so you can do sail-by-repairs to your boat out in the Ocean. Get close to a shoreline and build a Workbench along the shore, use it to repair your boat quickly then keep sailing.
- If you're playing in a single player game you can log out after a Leviathan shakes and starts to submerge. This will reset the timer.
- Jumping off a boat will make it immediately stop in the water. Use this to your advantage to properly position your boat.
