Valheim - How To Keep Your Base Safe

Before you can see in the Mistlands you'll need to use the Torn Spirit item that we got from Yagluth to create a Wisp Fountain. Annoyingly, you'll have to stand around this fountain at night and "pick" Wisps out of the air to collect them. My advice is to put it in a cental part of your base and pick them as you run by occasionally. Once you get a Wisp you can use it to make a Wisplight, a light good enough for just you.

Mistlands progression is split into two halves, the first half will involve cutting down trees in the Mistlands for Yggdrasil Wood and completing dungeons for Black Cores. You will need a Blackmetal Axe or better to cut down Yggdrasil Trees, but the sprouts you can do with a regular weapon (you don't need an axe).

Once you get some Black Marble, Yggdrasil Wood and Black Cores you can make the Black Forge which is your first new crafting station. The next station we can make is a Galdr Table which unlocks magic weapons and gear/equipment relating to magic. Magic is the second half of the Mistlands progression, it requires Sap and Refined Eitr which you can't get without Dvergr Extractors.

The Dvergr Extractors are obtained from raiding their settlements. You'll find docks, towers and mines--not all will be inhabited though and not all will have Extractors. Search the settlement for an elongated box with blue runes on it, that's the box with the Extractor. Be warned that destroying this box will upset the Dvergr and make them all attack! It's normally advised to draw attention of Seekers/Gjall first to take some Dvergr out or create confusion while you take the box.

In order to use the Extractor you will need to craft a Sap Extractor overtop of an Ancient Root in the Mistlands. To make this item you'll need 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 5 Black Metal and 1 Extractor; this means you will have to smelt Black Metal Scraps nearby or somehow bring them to this location. You will also have to protect the Sap Extractors while you wait on them to do their thing. For this reason and because you'll have to farm Magecaps and Jotun Puffs, people normally make a small Mistlands base.

When you finally harvest the Sap Extractor you'll get some Sap (big surprise). As a base, you can use Sap in some food and Mead recipes but the main thing we want it for right now is Refined Eitr. To refine Sap into Eitr you'll need to make an Eitr Refinery. Insert Soft Tissue into the top of the refinery and Sap into the hole and you'll get Refined Etir as a result. While this machine processes Eitr it will spit balls out which damage the terrain nearby. For this reason I recommend you have it outside and away from anything else in your base that could be damaged.

Soft Tissue can be obtained by creating a Black Metal Pickaxe and using it to mine the Giant Skulls that you find throughout the Mistlands. Ribcages will not give any Soft Tissue so they can be ignored completely.

Other Mistlands Tips & Tricks

- This biome takes a jump in difficulty when compared to the Plains, with the reduced visibility and compact dungeons it will be hard to avoid close combat fights like before. I strongly encourage you to spend more time preparing, make some Meads and Ooze Bombs to make the biome easier. Fire Resist Mead is good for the Gjalls, Tonic of Ratatosk and Lightfoot Mead are both good for exploring the open terrain.

- Ooze Bombs are one of the most effective items you can use when exploring the dungeons in Mistlands. You can use these bombs to hit enemies behind doors/walls without opening the door or wall. 2h maces deal AoE damage and can be used in the same way, but they'll break any door/wall down and let the enemies get to you too. Ooze Bombs will only deal damage to the enemies leaving you completely safe.

- Explore the Mistlands first and mark all dvergr settlements, Petrified Skulls and Dungeons on your map. If you find a good location with a lot of roots and ground you can grow crops on, that's worth marking too. Once everything is explored and marked you can go through again to clear the dungeons and Dvergr, I normally bring portal mats with me when I do the "gathering" part. Drop a Portal outside each dungeon so you can offload before and after clearing it and do the same for the Dvergr settlements.

- Lure Gjall and Seekers to the Dvergr settlements that you find if you're having trouble taking out the settlement on your own. Destroying Yggdrasil Roots or cutting down trees/mining stone will lure any nearby enemies. This works best at night when there are more enemies roaming out and about.

Picking A Mistlands Base Location

Probably one of the most important things you'll have to do in the Mistlands is to choose a base location. You'll need a base in the Mistlands because we need to gather lots of Sap to make the Refined Eitr, we also need some land for farming because we need Magecaps and Jotun Puffs. With all of this in mind you'll want to find a base location which has some agricultural land that is near 3 or more Ancient Roots.

Ideally you'll want the roots to be within your walls, I normally make the entire base around the roots so that I can be safe while I do my harvesting. Normally I choose the safest location that enemies can't get to for the farm. The last thing you want is something doing AoE damage in your crops and destroying them all, so you will normally want to build that in a safe spot.

There are two more things I look for too, the first is an area where there is no mist. If you can find an area like this with some Ancient Roots you'll be in luck. The next thing is somewhere safe, between two large mountains is a great location since the rocks and land will provide natural protection.

Easily Farm Black Marble

<Picture of the bridge structure in Mistlands>

When it comes to farming Black Marble you'll want to avoid mining the Petrified Bones that you find throughout Mistlands and instead focus on destroying the pre-existing structures. I strongly advise you to find one of those black marble bridges (pictured above) and destroy it with your weapons. Inside of these bridges will be Iron which is already smelted, all you need to do is destroy the iron grates to collect it.

Once you have the 2 Iron you can build a Stonecutter's Bench which will allow you to disassemble any Dvergr structure that you want. Then all you need to do is carry around portal mats and go from structure to structure dropping a Portal and a Stonecutters so we can collect our Black Marble. For the easiest time doing this, you'll want to explore your Mistlands first and mark/eliminate all dvergr settlements/structures. When it comes time for farming Black Marble you'll want all the settlements to already be cleared.

Leveling Your Magic Skills

Now that you have unlocked Magic in Valheim, you'll have to level it up to make it more useful. Elemental Magic is enjoyable to level up since it has you running around blasting enemies with either Frost or Fire, but Blood Magic is a real slog. Starting in Mistlands you only get two Blood Magic weapons, Dead Raiser and Staff of Protection. Dead Raiser will let you summon Skeletons and Staff of Protection will grant you a bubble of protection.

Staff of Protection is one of the best magic staves in the entire game and it's something many players who aren't even casters will use. The amount of damage it absorbs is insane and it's well worth the cost in health to use it. Dead Raiser on the other hand is terrible, the only way it can be made better is if the AI of Skeletons are made better (which I doubt will ever happen). If it lets us summon archers instead of melee at will instead of it being random, that would make it significantly better too.

The best way to raise Blood Magic is by using the Dead Raiser because every time the Skeletons hit an enemy you gain EXP. By far the biggest downsides to this are the Skeleton suck and you need 100 Eitr to summon one which means you'll need to use two magic foods minimum. This makes leveling Blood Magic very costly as far as time is concerned because you'll not only have to farm all of that food but you'll also have to spend time actually leveling Blood Magic.

I strongly recommend you level Blood Magic while doing something else like farming iron, doing the Sealed Tower, Smouldering Tomb or Howling Cave--something like that. Alternatively, if you just want to afk and get EXP the method most people do is create a Greydwarf Farmer using one of their spawners in the Black Forest.
