Youkol Village - Syberia 2 Walkthrough
When you regain control of Kate after falling through the ice you'll be in the Youkul Village. Talk to the Youkol man outside of your hut to learn where Hans is and about whatever else you wish to know. While you're here you should also search a pot next to the door and loot the Reindeer Antlers from it.
Go right until you find the large drums that are making all the noise and then go south one screen until you find yourself in the same location I am in the screen shot below. There is a lady stirring a pot in this screen and on the path across from her you can inspect the leather drying racks and loot a Leather Strap.
Tip: If you didn't already know you can double click to make Kate run when moving across the screen. This is a nifty little trick that will save you a lot of time navigating large areas like this village.
Check your inventory and you'll see that the Leather Strap and Reindeer Antlers were combined to make a Slingshot. Return to the drums and use your Slingshot on the icicles hanging above the drum to clear the path; then head on up the stairs. To be more specific you need to shoot the icicle that is hanging above the portion of the drum machine that water is flowing through. Check my screen shot above for the exact location.
At the top of the stairs you'll find a hut with Hans hanging from... something inside of it. Grab the Youkal Mask from the shelf to the right of the bed and then go left one screen and inspect the table in this room. Take the Prayer Wheel item then exit this shack.
Return to the screen where we got the Leather Strap earlier and this time examine the wooden contraption next to the lake (pictured below).
I'm not exactly what to call this thing, water well maybe? Either way investigate it for a close up screen then grab the Empty Flask which is hanging off of it and also the Cork Bung which is on the ground to the left of it. Use the Empty Flask you just picked up on the hook at the top of the machine then use the crank on the right hand side of it.
Presumably this lowers the water flask down into the lake then brings it back up which fills it for us. Grab the Flask Full of Water then leave this area and continue to the screen left of where we are now in the Youkol Town. You'll have to go left one more time until you find yourself at the same screen I am standing in below.
Our destination is the cave in the back, you'll have to cross the bridge and continue along the path then enter the cave.
Note: If you did not get a Fishbone earlier when we dealt with the bear at the hunting cottage you can get one now by visiting the Youki enclosure in town and picking up the Fish Bone here.
Inside of the cave you'll want to go to the left until you find the room with the ice wall (pictured above). There are going to be numerous steps we'll have to do in this room all in the correct order; as per usual for parts like this I change the format and create a list of exactly step by step what you need to do.
1. Put the Cork Bung in the bottom right hole
2. Attach the Prayer Wheel to the Mammoth Tusk Effigy/Harfang Perch in the bottom right of the screen and interact with it
3. Return to the Ice Wall and place the Cork Bung in front of the lemming so it can jump across
4. Move the Cork Bung again, this time into the bottom left hole (right behind the lemming)
5. Pour water into the top left hole to flood the tunnel and raise the lemming up to the top area
6. Place your Fishbones into the hole at the very top of the ice wall and it'll create a ladder for the lemming to use
After placing the Fishbone into the ice wall the lemming will tumble down the hole and spit out Dream Fruit which you should pick up. If you need any visual aid to help with this puzzle I have included a screen shot below that has each hole marked telling you what you'll need to put inside of it.
Exit the cave and return to the Spirit Woman; go through all available dialogue options with her until she takes your Dream Fruit and lets you into the dream world with Hans. When you enter the dream world you'll find yourself back in Valadilene, the first town we visited in Syberia 1. If you played the first game then you'll be familiar with the maps we're about to explore.
The first thing you'll want to do in the dream world is go into the back of the cave and pick up the Mammoth Doll, just like where it was at in the first game. Exit the cave and head towards town; the path is linear so even if you don't know where you're going you can't get lost.
While following the path you will eventually bump into Anna Voralberg (pictured below). Go through all available dialogue options with her to learn what you can then continue down the linear path into town.
Anna Voralberg in the dream world
If you haven't played the first Syberia game then you won't know where the Voralberg Mansion is, but that is our next destination. To reach the Voralberg Mansion you need to follow the main road through town north a couple of screens until you reach an open door on the right hand side of the road (pictured below).
Go through this open door and you'll find yourself at an intersection with a fountain, at this intersection you'll need to go right to reach the Voralberg Mansion. Inside the mansion you'll find Mr. Voralberg sitting on the couch reading a newspaper. Exhaust all possible dialogue options with him to get us the flags we need for the story.
Now what we need to do is mess with the clock to make it say 7:45 because that is what time Hans' dad leaves for work... but first we need to change the clock to say 2:45 in order to activate it. Use the right switch on the clock until the time says 2:00 (Roman numeral II) then use the left switch twice to make it 2:45.
If the time is set correctly you will be able to click both automatons next to the bell at the top of the clock to 'wind them up'. Once both automatons are wound up click the pendulum at the bottom to activate it and get it moving. For those of you that need some visual aid I have included a picture below of the clock when you do these steps right.
Left Switch: Moves time forward to 15 and 45min of each hour
Right Switch: Moves time forward to 30min and 00 of each hour
Now what we need to do is make the clock say 7:45 since that's what time Hans' dad leaves for work. Use the right switch until the time is 7:00 (Roman numeral VII) then click the left switch once - this will make it 7:15. Click the weight in the bottom right next to the pendulum and the hands on the clock will start spinning; then click the bell at the top of the clock to get Mr. Voralberg's attention.
Upon hearing the bell Mr. Voralberg will get up and place the Attic Key onto the table then leave for work. Pick up the Attic Key and go upstairs to find Hans; show him the Mammoth Doll to get him to talk to you and there will be a brief scene after which he disappears. When you are ready to leave the dream world interact with the mechanical device Hans was working on at the table.
When you are back in the real world the first thing you will want to do is call Oscar. After the phone call you will want to exit the Spirit Woman's hut and go south in the Youkol Village. Specifically go back to the screen where we filled the Empty Flask and found the Cork Bung. If you go south at this screen you will find a pen of Youkis on the next screen, this area is shown in my screen shot below.
Go north of the Youki pen and you'll find a ladder made of bone which will take you to another intersection. To get to Oscar you'll want to keep running towards the screen and follow the tunnel to its exit. You'll pass 2 Youkols before finding the train tracks and your train - it's right where we left it!
This next section I think is easier to explain in a list format. Below you'll find a step by step list of exactly what you need to do to advance the story.
1. Talk to Oscar in the engine room of the train about Train, Youkol and Youkol Mask
2. Interact with the rope in the front of the train; Kate won't be able to connect it on her own
3. Speak with the 2 Youkols who are next to the train tracks at the tunnel entrance about Help and Oscar
4. Click on the rope where it attaches to the train and pull the lever on it to get rid of all the slack
5. Go back into the Youkol tunnel and find the wooden bridge nearby (pictured below)
6. Pull the lever on the right in the middle of the wooden bridge
After the cutscene return to the Youkol village and find the train, it's in the same area where we got the Dream Fruit earlier in this chapter; head towards that cave and you'll find the train. Speak with Oscar about Heart at the train and he will walk off and end the conversation.
You can find Oscar back at the Spirit Woman's hut where Hans is. Interact with him lying on the table and you will see numerous buttons making a circle. The best way to explain this through text is to think of this puzzle like a clock. The part at the top with 2 metal pieces above it is 12.
Combination 1: 3 and 7
Combination 2: 3, 6, 9 and 12
If you'd prefer visual aids for solving these puzzles use my screen shots below. Click on them if you want a larger image.
Successfully completing this puzzle will make the Voralberg Key appear in the center of Oscar's heart, grab it and a cutscene will trigger. When the cutscene is over return to the train and go inside of the engine room Use the Voralberg Key that you just got in the center of the control panel above the metal valve in the center. This will activate the machine.
Now we have 3 tasks to complete to get the train operational. We need to fill it up with Coal and Water as well as some steam for ice melting. Take a look at all 3 of the gauges on the control panel, each correspond to one of the different things we have to do.
Water: Press the top left lever then flick the switch to the right of the metal valve in the center
Coal: Flip the lever in the top right, flip the lever in the top left then flick the other switch in the center next to the valve
Steam: Turn the bronze valve on the left side of the screen, flip the small switch to the right of it and then turn the small metal valve above that
If you need any help with visual aid for this puzzle I have included a screen shot below that should make the puzzle easier for you.
When you complete the puzzle successfully you'll get a cutscene; the train will spit out hot steam that melts the ice in front of you. After the cutscene exit the train and go down the wooden bridge then one screen over to the right. Hans walks onto the boat we just melted all of the ice from - head over to him and speak with him.
He'll ask you to go get the Youki animal that we had following us around earlier in the game. You can get the Youki from the Youki pen inside the village; head over to the pen and open it up to free the Youki then return to the boat where everyone is waiting for you.
Board the boat and you'll get another cutscene -- after which you'll be in a new area!
