Don't Starve Together Guides and Walkthroughs
One of the most important farms you can make in DST is the Varg Farm. This farm will give you a massive supply of Hound's Tooth, as well as Red Gems and Blue Gems. All of these items are extremely important for players because they are used in crafting some of the best items in the game. Hound's Teeth are used in making Tooth Traps which can be used to easily eliminate most enemies in the game. To name a few, you can use Tooth Traps to eliminate Moose Goose without ever having to melee it or you can use them to easily and quickly take out any Hound Waves.
Gems are used for many of the end game recipes that you can only make at the Ancient Psuedoscience Station. You will need a lot of teeth and a lot of gems if you want to make (and abuse) everything that is available to you. When it comes to making these Varg Farms you have a few different methods available to you. I will go over some of these methods on this page and give you the drawbacks and strengths of each.
The first Varg Farm method is the one shown in the screenshot above. This is a very standard Varg Farm which uses invulnerable walls to box in both the Vargs and myself. In order to design this Varg Farm you'll need a lot of materials (as you can see).
Varg Farm Loot: Hound's Tooth, Monster Meat, Red Gem, Blue Gem
Varg Farm Build Checklist:
1. Cobblestone the ground in your area
2. Make Catapults with GEMerator
3. Ice Box to store food
4. Chests for Gems/Loot/Armor
5. Box in this area with invulnerable walls
(OPTIONAL) Make a Houndius Shootius inside your box area
6. Make a SMALL Varg box that is no further than 6.5 tiles away from your area (Read below for more info)
7. Create 1 - 3 Telelocator Focus inside the Varg box
8. Build invincible walls around the Varg box then do regular walls surrounding those.
9. Do a Lightning Rod nearby
Varg-Hound Spawn Radius
What I am about to explain is going to get a little bit technical but it is very important if you want a perfect Varg Farm. The Hounds that Vargs spawn will pop into existence 6.5 tiles away from where the Varg is standing. If you look at the screenshot I have above, you can see that 6.5 tiles from the Vargs is actually inside of my small enclosure. This results in hounds spawning within my enclosure which is a minor issue.
You can measure these tiles by equipping a Pitchfork and counting the small square that are on the ground. Honestly, it really is not that big of a deal if Hounds spawn inside of your enclosure so long as you have some armor with you and an Ice Flingomatic to put out the fires from the Fire Hounds. You should have at minimum 4 Football Helms inside of the chests in your enclosure as well as a stocked fridge with food (and Thermal Stone). I'd also recommend you bring some bundled food too if you plan to stay here awhile.
Below is a quick list of supplies I recommend you bring/keep in your small enclosure.
What to Stock Your Enclosure With:
1. Armor (Football Helmets)
2. Ham Bat (Bundle Wrap it) or Dark Sword(s)
3. Red Gems or Blue Gems for GEMerator
4. Nitre or Rot for Ice Flingomatic
5. Fuel for your fire (Thermal or normal)
As for building your enclosure, you can do either Pawn Statues (any statue works) or End Tables. The only issue with doing End Tables is that they can catch on fire and burn up - your Iceflingomatic should be able to prevent that from happening though. As for the Varg enclosure, you'll want to wrap it in both invincible walls as well as regular stone/grass/wood walls. This may seem redundant but let me explain the logic.
Monsters in this game will get stuck on invincible walls since they try to run through them - this is what we want to happen to the Vargs but we don't want it to happen to the Hounds. If Hounds spawn into the world behind the Varg pen as they try to run to you they'll get stuck and it will be a pain because the only way to get them unstuck will be for you to leave your pen and coax them over to your Catapults.
Regular walls work differently though and monsters will avoid them by going around instead of trying to endlessly run into them. This is why we are going to double wrap the walls. The invincible wall is to keep the Vargs in the pen and prevent them from escaping; the normal walls are to make the Hounds go around and prevent them from getting stuck. Together with their powers combined they make the ultimate Varg Pen!
The screenshot above shows you my second attempt at making a Varg Farm and this one went a little bit better than the first. However, I built my enclosure too close to the Varg enclosure which resulted in two of my Catapults hitting the Vargs. This obviously was very bad so I smashed them and settled for only two Catapults. This slowed down farming by a marginal amount but overall it was still a good Varg Farm.
As you can probably imagine, the hardest part is making the Varg Farm and getting everything just right. Once you've actually set it up though - it's pretty easy to manage. Your Catapults will automatically shoot at most Hounds but you will occasionally have to give a Hound a good ol' whack to get them shooting again.
Once you are done with your Varg Farm what you should do is leave the area and let this part of the map unload. This will cause all of the Hound's Teeth, Monster Meat (and/or Rot) to stack up for you into full stacks of 40. What this means is instead of having to pick up 500 different items you'll only have to pick up 50!
Ideally you will want to leave your Vargs alive while you gather the loot in this area just incase you want to use your Varg farm again in the future. However, it will be difficult to pick up all of the items on the ground with multiple Hounds chasing/attacking you. My advice is to try and get them stuck on the walls because that will buy you time. Alternatively, bring some Pig or Merm friends with you when it's time to harvest your loot.
