Pig Farms - Don't Starve Together Guides

Pig Farm During Day

A Pig Farm is probably the most important thing you can set up in Don't Starve Together because it will give you Pig Skins which are used to make Football Helmets. Unless you're playing a character like Wigfrig who can make her own helmet you will most likely be using Football Helmets for the overwhelming majority of the game.

Football Helmets are very easy to make and provide the player with 80% protection from all incoming damage. Normally players will use Football Helmets instead of Log Armor because Log Armor takes up your chest slot which means you can't have a Backpack on you at the same time. In order to make a Football Helmet all you need is 1 Pig Skin and 1 Rope.

Each time a Pig is defeated it has a chance to drop a Pig Skin or Meat. Sometimes it doesn't drop either of these items though which is a bit unfortunate but thankfully something we can control. You may or may not already know this but during the Full Moon phase Pigs transform into Werepigs.

Werepigs are slightly harder than normal Pigs but they always drop 2 Meat and 1 Pig Skin. For this reason you'll pretty much always want to wait for a Full Moon to harvest your Pig Farm. The only time I harvest normal pigs is when I first start my Pig Farm, assuming that I need some Pig Skins to make Football Helmets or additional Pig Houses immediately.

Pig Farm During Full Moon

As far as constructing your Pig Farm, the goal is to build a small enclosure in the middle for you to put a Pig Skin or Powdercake into and then build Pig Houses around that. Use my screenshots above if you need to see what a Pig Farm should look like. The reason we are making a small enclosure and putting an item into the middle of it is because that will force the Pigs to remain outside during the evening and night.

How this works is, if a Pig is currently en route to food they will not return to their house when it gets dark out. This forces the Pigs to stay outside 24/7 and thus be exposed to the Full Moon when it arrives. Additionally, this method makes it significantly easier to farm the Werepigs because they'll be focused on getting the food and not fighting you. You'll only have to fight the Werepigs 1 on 1 when it comes time to harvest your loot because only the pig you're currently fighting will attack you.

The last thing we need to take into consideration is where to put this Pig Farm. I recommend you put it somewhat close to your base but not in your base. You'll want to be able to quickly run here on the day of a Full Moon and you'll also want a Lightning Rod (and maybe an Ice Flingomatic) nearby to prevent catastrophies. The Lightning Rod will prevent Lightning Strikes during rain and the Ice Flingomatic will prevent Wildfires during Summer. I honestly recommend you play with Wildfires off because they're super annoying but if you keep them on... An Ice Flingomatic is your best friend.

Additional Notes

- If you are playing Webber, Wurt or some other character that Pigs are hostile to then you should rest assured that during the full moon they will not agro onto you as a group.
