Don't Starve Together Guides and Walkthroughs
<Bearger Destroying Trees>
One of the earliest farms that you will want to setup in DST is a Log Farm. Logs are something that you are going to need a ton of and there really is no way around that reality. The best log farms are typically made by planting a ton of trees in a small and compacted area and then letting one of the World Bosses like Bearger or Deerclops knock them all down. The added bonus to a farm like this is the World Bosses will be killed by Treeguards so it solves both of your problems at the same time.
Despite this being the best way to farm logs - it isn't always the most practical. What I mean by that is, setting up these farms takes alot of time and you'll be limited to only being able to farm trees 2 seasons out of the entire year this way. Also, if you want to kill the boss at the same time you'll have to use Pine Cones since they grow into Evergreen trees. This is fine and all except for the fact that Evergreen Trees can turn to stone on you which means no Logs and no Treeguards.
The alternative is to use Birchnuts which will turn into Birch Trees. Birch will never turn to stone but the Treeguards they spawn aren't strong enough to kill Deerclops or Bearger so you'll have to deal with them yourself after having them knock down the trees.
Basically, this method of farming comes with various pros and cons - much like the other methods I am going to mention below. It's up to you to figure out which method works best for you and which method you want to use.
Log Farming With Pigs
The next method of Log farming is one of the most reliable methods - but it isn't available to all characters. Some characters in this game (like Wurt, Webber) are hostile to Pigs by default and they won't be able to befriend them which means you won't be able to use them as hired help to knock down trees. Everyone else though only needs to bribe the Pigs with some Meat and they will follow you around and help you in combat or help you cut down trees.
What I recommend for this method is to build 6 - 10 Pig Houses in an area that's close to a forest. I recommend you craft a small little cage and put food in it too that will lure the pigs. Kind of like what we did in the Pig Farm Guide; this will hold all of the Pigs in one area which makes locating and feeding them much easier.
Bring some basic Meat (cooked meals typically give longer "friendship" time) and feed each of the pigs when you want to use them... Then go to work cutting down trees until you spawn Treeguards - at which point your piggies will likely meet their end. This is ok though because you'll normally get plenty of logs before this happens and your pig friends will deal quite a bit damage to the Treeguard. Sometimes if only one Treeguard spawns they'll win!
Since you will occasionally have to deal with a Treeguard that means you'll also collect Living Logs via this method. You will also get Pig Skin and Meat as your piggy allies meet their end.
Log Farming With Maxwell
Another method of collecting Logs involves the character Maxwell and his special ability, Shadow Servant. When the player uses Maxwell they will be able to summon Shadow Servants which will collect resources on their behalf. These servants will cut down trees, mine rocks, harvest grass or twigs and they will bring everything back to Maxwell and put it in your inventory.
The biggest drawback to this method is that you will have to switch to Maxwell in order to do it. This will obviously cost resources to do (including resources to use his Book when you run out). For this reason I would only recommend the Maxwell method to people that are late game and already have a lot of resources to spare. Maxwell is a good, what I would describe, lazy farmer.
You can use Maxwell for quickly clearing out forests (stone ones too) or quickly harvesting all of your resources in your Grass, Twig or Log farms. He is also good for breaking up Stone Fruit and gathering up your Bull Kelp Farms. The biggest drawback to using Maxwell for Logs is when a Treeguard spawns - you'll have to deal with him yourself! My advice is to run to the entrance of the underground, zone in and zone out to break agro.
Log Farming With Merms
For those of you who are playing Wurt you won't be able to hire pigs for help since they will be hostile to you - instead you'll have to hire Merms! Everything I said during the pig section above applies here to the Merms, the only real difference is that you will have to feed Merms vegetables since they don't eat Meat.
Just like with the Pigs I recommend you build some Craftsmerm Huts nearby a forest to reduce the travel time. You can feed them any Fruit, Vegetable, Seeds or Crock Pot recipe you want - just like with the pigs the meal you choose will determine the friendship timer (how long they follow you). I prefer to feed them Ratatouille because it gives 7min of friendship per feeding and it's extremely easy to make.
Merms are a little bit stronger than pigs so they will stand a better chance against any Treeguards that spawn... However you should still expect them to get wiped out by Treeguards if too many spawn at a time. As far gathering wood goes - Merms will gather at the exact same rate as pigs.
Other Tips & Tricks
- Whenever an Evergreen Treeguard spawns you should run to the nearest underground entrance and go downstairs then come back up. This will break agro on the Treeguard and they won't bother you again unless you attack them or cut down a tree near them. Another thing you could do is log out of the game then log back in. This will break agro too.
