Grass Gekko Farms - Don't Starve Together Guides
One of the easiest farms you can do in Don't Starve Together if you're looking for Cut Grass is a Grass Gekko farm. Anyone who has been playing DST long enough has probably experienced their replanted Grass Tufts turning into Grass Gekkos and running off... You can actually turn this really annoying mechanic into something very beneficial for us!
In order to make a Grass Gekko farm all you need to do is plant some grass in an area and box it in with a wooden fence and a gate. After planting a Grass Tuft there is a 25 day wait after which there's a 1% chance that a Grass Gekko will spawn when you pick it... Unless there is a Grass Gekko within 5 tiles of the Grass Tuft - then one can not spawn in the area.
To make the Grass Gekkos drop their tail of Cut Grass you must frighten them. You can automate this a couple of different ways including by using Chester or by putting a different non-hostile animal into their pen. Alternatively, you can choose to only frighten them when you're nearby and picking the grass - just note that doing it this way will get you less Cut Grass overall.
You have a few more additional choices depending on what you want to do with this farm and how much Cut Grass you want. What I mean by this is you can keep spawning Grass Gekkos until you have over a dozen of them and then keep them in a pen exclusive to them. To do this you'll need to make a grass pen then connect it to another nearby pen with some fences and gates.
Each time you spawn Grass Gekkos in the grass pen you'll need to scare them into the Gekko pen. So long as the Gekko pen is more than 5 Pitchfork tiles away you'll always have a chance to spawn Gekkos in the grass pen. A screenshot of how I did this is shown below.
I personally am a giant fan of this farm but only temporarily because you'll get inundated with Cut Grass extremely fast. Over the course of an entire in game year if you never pick the grass and you make sure the Gekkos are constantly scared you'll end up with hundreds and maybe even a thousand Cut Grass. After leaving my Grass Gekko farm going for 2 in game years I ended up with about 2 dozen stacks of Cut Grass and I have still yet to use it all 5 - 7 years later in game.
This is a good outcome - since it generated me more Cut Grass than I even know what to do with. I would argue the only downside to this farm is the lag it will generate if you leave it running without cleaning it up every couple of in game years. This is why I think it's a good temporary farm but it's probably not something I would always leave running the entire time because you'll generate more Cut Grass than you could ever use and eventually it won't be worth your time to gather it any more.
With all of that said, let's take a look at a few spins on this idea that work pretty well too. Below is a screenshot of my favorite Grass Gekko pen that I have made; there is nothing inside this pen to scare the Gekkos but that's fine because I don't need infinite Cut Grass anymore.
Grass Gekko - Cut Grass & Twig Pen
As you can see in the screenshot above the pen I made doubles as a Twig and Cut Grass farm with a Fire Pit in the center. Out of all the characters in this game I would recommend Maxwell the most in this situation. He can summon Shadow Servants that will harvest all of the Twigs and Cut Grass in just a couple of minutes. Normally, when I need Twigs, Logs, Stones, Flint, etc etc (really any replenishable resource) I switch to Maxwell temporarily and use him to gather it. Maxwell can harvest resources at such a significantly faster rate than everyone else that I just can't resist using him for stuff like this.
Other Tips & Tricks
- The screenshot you see at the top of this page is a Powder Monkey - Grass Gekko Farm. This is a farm that is designed to work a lot like the Chester version but instead of Chester you have a Powder Monkey. Mr. Powder Monkey will scare the Gekkos and cause them to drop their tales, he will also pick them up. This solves the insane lag problem that occurs with Chester if you don't clear out your Grass Farm yearly.
