Berry Bush Farms - Don't Starve Together Guides

Berry Bush Farm

Another option for you when it comes to food production in Don't Starve Together is the berry bush farm which will reward you with berries as well as Drumsticks if done correctly. The first thing you need to do when setting up your berry bush farm is count out how many pitchfork tiles you want it to be then set up a fence and build a small box in the middle similar to Pig Farms.

The small box in the middle should have a gate for you to get in and out - just like the pig farm and like the picture you see on this page. You'll want to place a Powdercake into the small box that you created to serve as bait to distract/catch any Gobblers that you trigger from the berry bushes.

How this farm works is pretty straight forward, Gobblers will come out of the berry bushes when you pick berries off of them. If it is during the day then the Gobbler will walk towards the Powdercake and get stuck on one of the walls that you put up. During the dusk or night the Gobbler will ignore the Powdercake and instead run into any other nearby bushes. What this means is you can only get Gobblers and Drumsticks by using this method during the day.

One tip I can give you, if you are using Juicy Berry Bushes - you should space them out a little bit more. When you cram them together they can be difficult to harvest easily (and by that I mean by holding down the space bar). Your character will harvest multiple bushes without picking up all the berries and Gobblers will run to those berries first a lot of the time. This not only results in one lost berry but they may hide before going to the Powdercake too and result in no Drumsticks for you.

Gobbler Stuck on fence

My personal feelings on this farm are mixed at best. I like organizing my berry bushes in this format in a nice packed together area but I find myself almost never harvesting the bushes. There are so many other ways to produce food in this game that I never need to harvest the berries. When playing Multiplayer though, they're good to have around in a pinch since they can provide food for a couple of days if you cook up the berries.

When I do harvest berries the recipe I find myself doing the most is called Fist Full of Jam. You can make this recipe with 1 Berry and 3 filler if you want but I typically do 3 Berries and 1 Ice or just 4 Berries. Fist Full of Jam gives you more hunger than 4 Berries as well as some Sanity and Health. It also has a much slower decay rate which means you can store it for twice as long as a regular berry.

All in all, a berry bush farm isn't a bad idea for food if you don't have other sources available. It takes probably half a day at most to harvest all of the Berry Bushes then cook up the jam and you'll have a couple days worth of food from that little time spent. More often than not people probably use this farm to collect Drumsticks since they're hard to get and part of some good recipes.

Before we close out this guide I feel that I should mention that Berries and Juicy Berries exist in this game. Above this paragraph you see two screenshots of Berry Bushes which give normal Berries. Below this paragraph you can see a screenshot of Juicy Berry Bushes which give you Juicy Berries.

Juicy Berry Bush Farm

Juicy Berries rot faster but restore more hunger and a little health. Depending on your world generation you may have Juicy Berry Bushes or you may have regular Berry Bushes. If you get Juicy Berry Bushes then you can typically find normal Berry Bushes in the caves or in a few set pieces that have them naturally.

The only thing you should do different with Juicy Berry Bushes when you're building this farm is to space them out a tad bit more. This will give you more room to pick up the food since it drops on the ground around you. My last piece of advice is to never cook your berries. Cooking berries makes them spoil significantly faster which is probably the opposite effect you're trying to achieve by cooking them.

Other Tips & Tricks

- A fence around your berry farm isn't required but it will prevent other creatures from eating or messing with your berries.

- Space out your Juicy Berry Bushes more than the regular Berry Bushes. When harvesting a Juicy Berry bush berries will fly in every direction instead of going into your inventory.

- I strongly recommend against cooking berries in any circumstance. You should turn them into Jam at the Crockpot instead.
